USMLE score release: the four week norm and eight week rule

Most USMLE results arrive within four weeks, but USMLE tells you to plan for eight. The notice comes from whoever registered you.

Short answer

USMLE says Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 3 results are typically available within four weeks of your test date, and that you should allow at least eight weeks. The email comes from the organization that registered you, and your score report stays on its website for about a year.

How long results take

USMLE publishes two numbers, and they answer different questions:

  • Four weeks is what usually happens. Results for the computer-based Steps are typically available within four weeks of the test date.
  • Eight weeks is what to plan around. When you choose a test date or ask about a result, USMLE says to allow at least eight weeks to receive notice that your score report is available.

USMLE does not publish release dates or a day of the week. A result at five or six weeks is later than usual but still inside the window USMLE tells you to plan for.

Who tells you, and where

USMLE does not email results itself. When your score is ready, the organization that registered you for the exam sends an email. The score report is then available on that organization's website for approximately 365 days from the date of the email, so download a copy.

What the result shows

StepHow it is reported
Step 1Pass or fail only
Step 2 CKNumeric score; minimum passing score 218 for exams on or after July 1, 2025
Step 3Numeric score; minimum passing score 200 for exams on or after January 1, 2024

USMLE also notes that if you do not open every block of an exam, it may not be scored and the attempt may be reported as incomplete on your transcript.

No early or phone results

USMLE says it does not give scores or outcomes by telephone, email or fax to anyone, and that scoring is not sped up for any individual or group. Waiting for the official email is the only route.

Planning around the wait

  • Count eight weeks from your test date when a deadline depends on your result, such as an application or a rotation.
  • Check your inbox and the registering organization's website, not USMLE's own site.
  • Save your score report within the year it stays online.
